# App and Theme Compatibility

> Explains how to enable the Iconic Blocks app embed, what Online Store 2.0 themes are, how to verify your theme supports app blocks, which popular themes are compatible, and what to do if your theme is not supported.

Iconic Blocks has two requirements before blocks will display on your product pages:

1. **The app embed must be enabled** in the Theme Editor

2. **Your theme must be an Online Store 2.0 theme** that supports app blocks

Both must be in place. Meeting only one of the two will result in blocks not displaying on the live store.

## Step 1 — Enable the App Embed

The app embed is the switch that activates Iconic Blocks for your store. It must be turned on in the Theme Editor before any blocks will appear on your live product pages.

**How to enable the app embed:**

1. Go to **Online Store → Themes** in your Shopify admin

2. Click **Customize** on your active theme

3. In the left sidebar, click the **App Embeds** icon — the puzzle piece icon at the bottom of the left sidebar navigation

4. Locate **Iconic Blocks** in the app embeds list

5. Toggle it **on**

6. Click **Save**

Once saved, return to your product template and verify your blocks are displaying. If blocks are still not showing after enabling the app embed, work through the steps on the General Troubleshooting page.

**Key points about the app embed:**

* It must be enabled separately for each theme — if you switch themes, update a theme, or duplicate a theme, re-enable the app embed in that version

* The Theme Editor preview may show blocks even when the app embed is off — always verify on the live store in an incognito window

* Enabling the app embed activates the app but does not add blocks — you still need to add individual blocks to each product template manually

## Step 2 — Verify Theme Compatibility

Iconic Blocks requires a Shopify theme built on the **Online Store 2.0** architecture. This architecture introduced app blocks — the feature that allows apps like Iconic Blocks to add configurable blocks directly to page templates through the Theme Editor.

**What is Online Store 2.0?** Online Store 2.0 is Shopify's current theme architecture, introduced in 2021. Themes built on this architecture support app blocks, sections on every page, and JSON templates. All themes released in the Shopify Theme Store after mid-2021 are built on Online Store 2.0. Most premium third-party themes from that period onward also support it.

**How to check if your theme is compatible:**

1. Go to **Online Store → Themes** in your Shopify admin

2. Click **Customize** on your active theme

3. Use the top center dropdown to navigate to a **product template**

4. Click **Add block** in the left sidebar

5. Look for an **Apps** section in the block list

If the **Apps** section is visible — your theme supports app blocks and is compatible with Iconic Blocks.

If the **Apps** section is not visible — your theme does not support app blocks and is not compatible.

## Compatible Themes

Any Online Store 2.0 theme is compatible with Iconic Blocks. The following are commonly used compatible themes:

**Free Shopify themes:** Dawn, Sense, Refresh, Crave, Ride, Craft, Origin, Colorblock

**Popular premium themes:** Impulse, Prestige, Impact, Turbo, Symmetry, Motion, Broadcast, Pipeline, Venue, Expanse

This list is not exhaustive. If your theme is not listed, use the Theme Editor check method above to verify compatibility directly.

## What to Do If Your Theme Is Not Compatible

**Option 1 — Switch to a compatible theme** The most reliable solution. Shopify's free themes — particularly Dawn — are fully compatible, well-maintained, and built for performance. Before switching, document your current theme settings so you can replicate them in the new theme.

**Option 2 — Update your current theme** If your theme provider has released an updated version with Online Store 2.0 support, updating may add app block compatibility. Go to **Online Store → Themes** and check whether an update is available. Back up your current theme before updating as updates may reset prior customizations.

**Option 3 — Contact your theme developer** If you are using a premium theme without app block support, contact the developer to ask whether an Online Store 2.0 update is planned. Many theme developers have released or are actively working on compatible versions.

## After Switching Themes or Updating Your Theme

**After switching themes:** The app embed and all block configurations from your previous theme do not carry over. After switching:

1. Open the new theme in the Theme Editor

2. Go to **App Embeds** and enable the Iconic Blocks toggle

3. Navigate to each product template

4. Re-add all blocks using **Add block → Apps → Iconic Blocks**

5. Reconfigure each block and save

6. Verify on the live product page in an incognito window

**After updating your theme:** Theme updates can reset the app embed toggle and remove blocks from product templates. After any update:

1. Go to **App Embeds** and confirm the Iconic Blocks toggle is still on — re-enable if needed

2. Check each product template and confirm all blocks are still present

3. Re-add any missing blocks, save, and verify on the live page

## Still Having Compatibility Issues?

If your theme supports app blocks, the app embed is enabled, and blocks are still not displaying correctly — contact Iconic Blocks support with:

* Your store URL

* The name and version of your theme

* A description of the specific issue

* A screenshot if the problem is visual
